Commissioner's Corner
Wow, what a celebration! I hope you enjoyed the 100th Anniversary of the BSA as much as I did. Now it’s time to get started on the Second Century of Scouting. As part of the Second Century, you will see an increase in technology being used to deliver the Scouting program. This is currently evident in E-Learning, Internet Rechartering (just completed) and Internet Advancement. These tools will allow volunteers and units to complete tasks themselves in a more accurate and timely fashion than submitting paper reports to the council. All units and volunteers should be given the choice to use these tools. If you need help accessing them, or more information about them, please contact your Unit commissioner.

Thank you for your support of the new training requirements! I’m sure that we all agree that having trained leaders will help provide a better program for our youth. Remember that all adult leaders need to complete Youth Protection Training (YPT) every two years. If you keep your email address updated in your MyScouting account, you will be reminded to retake the training. Also, all direct contact leaders should plan to complete all training for their position in 2011. Unit Commissioners will be reviewing your unit’s training plans during their visits in the first quarter.

Fifth grade Webelos should be busy visiting Boy Scouts troops and planning their crossover to Boy Scouting. This should happen no later than the end of March. It is important for them to get rooted in their troop well before the troop’s summer camp experience. Webelos that wait until the end of the school year to cross over do not have time to prepare for summer Boy Scout activities. If you need help locating a troop to visit, please contact your Unit Commissioner or District Commissioner.

For Venturers and Sea Scouts, we are preparing to hold a Council level Venturing Program Forum (Roundtable) starting in February. We feel that bringing the Crews and Ships together across districts will help us develop a better training and information sharing forum. Look for details online in January about this.

Commissioners have been busy visiting units and assisting with rechartering! In December 2010, Commisisoners made 100 visits to 73 different units. For 2010, 713 visits were made to 180 units (23.84% of Traditional and Exploring units). For 2011, Commissioners will visit every unit. You can see how your district did by reviewing these reports:

Lastly, I’d like to personally invite volunteers that are completing their service as a Webelos Den Leader to consider serving as a Unit Commissioner. Your knowledge and experience as a Den Leader makes you an excellent candidate to help the next generation of Cub Scout leaders. Contact your District Commissioner for more information. We’d love to meet to discuss this with you.

Watch for monthly updates from me here and thank you for volunteering and/or having your child in the Scouting program.

Yours in Scouting,
Ron Lime
Council Commissioner
